About the Board Learning Centre

The Board Learning Centre (BLC) is a series of training modules that defines a curriculum of trusteeship designed to strengthen school board governance. The learning opportunities presented here on BLC will complement and support the face-to-face learning offered by provincial school board associations.

BLC is a service of the Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) in partnership with provincial affiliates:

Startup funding for this project was provided by the Office of Learning Technologies (OLT), Department of Human Resources Development Canada.

School board associations have a mandated responsibility to provide board members with ongoing opportunities to develop the skills necessary to govern effectively, and to increase their understanding of both longstanding and emerging education issues. Traditionally, this need has been met by holding occasional workshops or seminars in central locations, sessions that required the physical presence of school board members. Although this approach may have been effective in years gone by, emerging technologies and changing expectations now require us to explore alternative ways of providing timely, accessible, and cost-effective training.

What makes this vision practical is the speed with which computing and networking technology is becoming available to the masses, market acceptance of the technology and the undeniable benefits of distributed learning. As well, studies have shown that multimedia instruction can be more effective than more conventional methods, in terms of savings in time and costs, and in outcomes such as retention of information presented.
